"It is an exciting time to be doing gynecologic oncology, because of all the recent discoveries.  One of the most important things that has come across in the last few years is the ability to identify patients who have genetic predisposition to cancer of the ovary and cancer of the breast.  With BRCA1 and BRCA2 testing, patients who are suspect of having a familial tendency to cancer can receive increased surveillance, chemo-prophylaxis and even surgical prophylaxis in some cases.  These procedures can be life saving and it is important to be able to know who to offer these tests to as well as what to do in interpreting the results."

Religious Leaders:

  • Rabbi Richard Address
Director: Union for Reform Judaism: Department of Jewish Family Concerns

“One of the highest of our Jewish values is that of pikuach nefesh , the saving of life. The rapid progress in medical technology in general, and genetics research in particular, has brought increased attention to the issue of genetic testing and various types of organ and tissue transplantation. Across the denominational spectrum of contemporary Judaism, involvement in these areas is increasingly seen as being a modern mitzvah. Education and awareness are fundamental aspects in breaking down the barriers of fear and misinformation that may still exist within our community. The "gift of life" is our most precious possession. To "save" a life is among our highest of callings. The blessing of medical technology has begun to make it possible for us to remove the barriers of fear and ignorance in order to save and enhance life. May this continue to be God's will.”

"Knowledge is power, and I mean religious power. We make the most appropriate decisions when we have the best knowledge available to us. Judaism treasures learning and knowledge in all realms, because all knowledge enables us to make appropriate Jewish decisions. The premium our tradition places on pikuach nefesh (the obligation to save life) requires not only commitment and will, but information, as well. JACOB International and Reach Global exists to help Jews and non-Jews acquire the information they need to make informed choices and save lives."

“With the advancements in technology I am awestruck that we are able to test for these devastating diseases that in many cases will spare countless women so much pain and suffering.  To quote a famous phrase, "If we can save one life, it is as if we have saved the world".  There is no doubt that lives will be saved due to the efforts of JACOB International.  It is my honor to serve on the Advisory Board.”
